Alright, so Monty Python and the Holy Grail is one of my favorite movies to date. If you've ever heard of Monty Python and/or the Flying Circus, you know that this is classic British nutiness in all of it's goodness. If you like that kind of thing, that is. I do, but i'm writing this so D'UH! Anywhoo, the basic story took King Arthur and his knights quest for the Holy Grail and blindfolded it, spun it around and ran it off a cliff. Then scooped it up, reshaped it with Lego's and Lincoln Logs, blew it up (yes, with the Holy Hand Grenade of Anitoch), buried it with seeds, watered it, grew it into shrubbery, uprooted it, ground it up,  and used the fine powder from it for face paint.

You know, this is going to open up a section on movies, so I will have to get on that. This may include an idea a friend of mine had that may come to fruition (Hi, Baby Jaguar!). Anyway, being that, I can't resist when I hear or see something that reminds me of that movie. While I was working (read; not really, but I am AT work), I came across this on ThinkGeek:

I love ThinkGeek! They always have great Geek stuff. I wonder where do they get those wonderful toys. Now, if you are a fan of the movie, you know what these are. And you're still reading this, possibly. For everyone else, assuming they lasted this long, the cute little rabbit these slippers represent played an intregral part of the movie....
Ok, that was a lie, but the part it showed up in was, and still is, funny to me. Don't let the cuteness  fool you. Ths foul beast had sharp teeth and a bad temper. Let's just say that this joker took down many a man and made one soil his armor. And now you can have a pair of Killer Rabbit Slippers of your very own. They are nice and plush looking, and could quite possibly be trained to go after an enemy if properly motivated. I doubt carrots or lettuce will do it. I would buy these, but I am afraid of them. But on the plus side, if got them, you could look like Val Kilmer in Real Genius! Or maybe not.

UPDATE: The person responsible for hiring the person writing this post has been sacked. (Sorry , couldn't resist) Oh, just watch the movie, already.

The K Chronicles By Keith Knight

Looking at this strip reminds me of a simliar offering. Oh believe me, this strip wasn't trippin'. There is an actual virtual club that exists, but i'm reffering to something that i've been hearing about a bit lately. It's called Second Life (SL) and it has been around for a few years (2003) now. It's a virtual world instead of just a nightclub. The way I hear it, you can do virtually (pun intended) anything you can do in real life (yes, even that, you freak). You can run around, dance, interact with other avatars (virtual character) who have actual people controlling them, "own" land, make stuff, buy and sell made stuff for real money, etc. More on that in a second.

So here is he rundown as I caught it. You go the the site, sign up (for free, but it's only for trial),
download the program, make your avatar(in your own likeness or someone else if you're one of those types), go in and be your or them or someone completely different. Now remember that I said that you can buy and sell stuff for real money, well that is true to a point. You may sign up for free, but if you want to do anything worthwhile, you have to come up off of some actual dough. You see, the world has it's own curency called Linden that can be exchanged for real scratch. Don't worry, I hear a Dollar goes longer than it does in real life(RL, as they say). So when you go in, you plunk down some dollars (you need a credit card, I hear), it gets exchanged for Linden, and you can buy land and a house to park on it. Houses need furniture and I know you would want to stay freshly dipped, so you go to the mall and shop for vitual clothes and stuff for the house. I believe you can even buy transportation to get around. I heard something of a transporter like Star Trek can be used. And when I say make stuff, that's what's up. You can make stuff to sell in the world. From jewelry to clothes to cars and houses and so on and so on. I hear the scripting language used in world is relatively simple.

Now when I said you can interact with other inhabitants, that is suppposedly what it means. You can walk up to someone and chat them up. I think it uses some kind of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), but I'm not sure. You can invite someone (or more people) to your virtual crib, sit down and watch a movie, or even have a house party. Hell, the BBC is even having a music festival, so that should tell you how big it was gotten. I hear people have even started businesses in SL. And making real money, no less. Virtual hoes got eat, too. It's really funny, but interesting at the same time.

I can actually see some use out of this little setup. I have people sprinkled around the country and one or two across the rest of the map. You could meet up with your people here and hang out when you know you can't catch them face to face in real life. What I can't yet see is paying a minimum of $10 a month for the priviledge. That's not including what you pay for in world. Now, I hear you saying, "Why not pick up the phone, write them a letter, get see them, or what not."? True, but this sounds more fun, plus not everyone is that close to see each other. And those of saying, "This is stupid. Why would you put yourself out there for some game?" Well, stop checking your Myspace account and think about it, first. Yea, that's what I thought. I'm not saying this is for everybody, but someone could find this interesting. I do, but like I said, I'm not ready to come out of my wallet yet. I don't play online games like World of Warcraft, either so this isn't saying anything. I may actually try it one day. If anyone has, holla at me and let me know what's up.

The reason I find this interesting is because I came through the ways of alternate communication. Those like me that use Skype, blogging, and such started out through the gates of email and ISCA BBS's (you know who you are), etc. It's just a wolf to the 25th power, in a sense, and not much different except in presentation. So anyway, go discuss, try it. I'm out. And if it wasn't already obvious, I will say it again that I haven't tried it, so let the warning stand here.

And you will need a respectable computer, it seems.

Because we need more funny

You know, I keep coming across this page every so often, and it never ceases to amuse me.

Welcome to uComics Web Site featuring (th)ink - Comics, Online Comics, Political Cartoons, Comics by Email

And of course you have to join to see more of this, but that won't happen. The artist's name is Keith Knight, a brother once refered to as 'the other African American cartoonist' (at least from what I saw in an interview). The one being Aaron McGruder, of Boondocks fame (trust me, there are WAY more than these two). Keith is the self published author of The K-Chronicles and (th)ink comic strips and others. His strips are funny, usually tinged in politics, race, and satire, with Hip Hop influences for flavor. Simliar to the aforementioned Mcgruder. You may have seen some of his works on Salon.com or other places. He apparently is also a rapper dealing in conscious rhymes, something we could use more of, really. I know that he has at least four or more books that i've been meaning to check out. I guess this a sign to check them out, huh. But instead of me regurgitating his bio, go read it for yourself and check the man out for yourself.

K-Chronicles - Bringing the "funny" back to the funny pages.

And here are a couple of other places where you can check out him and his work:

New Toy!

Posted by Roddykat in ,

Hey guess what? I just got new camera about a week ago. Now before you start grumbling, no I will not saturate with pictures every day. In fact, there is no telling if I will post anything I take after this. Well, that is probably a lie, but I to try. Really, I just been taking random shots trying to feel it out. I've always loved photography, but never got serious about it... Well, there was that one time I tried to get into nude photography, but that never took off (yuck yuck).

The camera I got was the Canon A610. It's a pretty good camera so far. It's not real fast, but it takes good pictures which, of course, has some dependency on the user. I just wanted a point and shoot camera with a tinge of manual features that I can mess with. You know, something to whip out on short trips and such. I plan to get a "heavy duty" prosumer camera later, so I can really get into the mode. I also have an old 35mm camera for when I feel like going back to film. I love digital, but there is still something to be said for film photography. It's kind of like vinyl (records) versus CD's. They both have there place in my heart. Some things just sound good on records.

Anyway, if I do come across any good shots, I may put it up. Oh, it does video also, but personally, it still seems to me silly to have tht capability on a still camera. DOn't get me wrong, I can see the use for it, but it still seems silly. But hey, what do I know, I never cared for cameras in cell phones and PDA's or the mixture of all three.

Oh berfore I get to the couple of pictures I do want to share, I have to mention this. I was asked to read a work in progress for an acqauintence of mine a while back and I just started. I assume she wants my opinion on it, which she's going to get regardless. So far, I am liking the way it started. I wish I could say more about it, but i can't. It wouldn't be fair to her anyway. But I will say that I am looking forward to reading it more. I don't do much reading as I used to so it really takes something to get into a book or something of the like. Unless it's something erotic, then my interest is picqued if it starts well. What I reading now is not erotic literature that I know of, but it's starting out good. You know what I want? If some of you out there write whether for hobby, personal, or whatever, share. You may have something people need to read. I personally wouldn't mind seeing it even though I NO book publishing conections what so ever. I've wanted to start a site to share some works, but I don't know if that will ever fly. But if you wouldn't mind letting a complete stranger check out your goods (well if you've been with me this long, we aren't strangers), you can send it to my email address. Poetry, short story, haiku, naughty limerick, novel, erotic, or not. I don't care. Just no WAR AND PEACE type thickness. I can never promise to read it. Just thought i'd throw that out there, though.

Oh, I almost forgot. I have a couple of pictures to show you. This was involving showing the camera to my wife. Now, if these happen to disappear, you can guess why.

This is my wife before she found out I had the camera.

This is my wife after she found out I had the camera.

And on that note, i'm out!

Addition to last post

Here is an addendum to the last post. CNET has a section on internet phones and VoIP. If you have a chance, check it out.

Internet Phones: CNET Editors' guide to VoIP

YAAAYYYYYYYY!! Skype me!

Posted by Roddykat in ,

So i'm just perusing (read: catching up on) blogs I frequent, when I come across this:

TinyScreenfuls.com » Blog Archive » SkypeOut calling now free to US and Canada

If you hadn't, read through and check it out. I'll be here when you finish.....

Alright, i'm a little slow, but this is cool. I've been meaning to do a voice over internet protocol primer (VoIP) for a while now. It's not gonna happen now either, but here's the skinny. There are programs out there that will let you place phone calls on the internet for literally little to nothing. This is basically like Instant messaging, but with voice (and nowadays video in cases). If you've seen those commercials for Vonage or the "Digital Phone" deal from cable companies like Time Warner, then you have seen one side of it. These basically take your landline phone service out of the equation (unless you have DSL broadband) and run your calls, as i've said, through the internet. My best friend has Vonage and the voice quality is great. You would not know that the call was going through the 'net. You also get voicemail and the option to check your voicemail over the web as an MP3 attachment(at least Vonage as I know it). However the drawback is, no power, no phone. Unless you keep a generator handy. And you NEED Broadband internet service. Dial up WILL not work with this!

That's one way. The other way to do VoIP is calling computer to computer. This is usually free and all you would need is your computer, a headset (or microphone and speakers) plugged into said computer, and a program like Skype, Project Gizmo, Google Talk (now integrated with Gmail), MSN, Yahoo messenger, AOHELL(probably or soon), and others. They all allow you to talk to others on the individual programs, but not each other. And I don't expect that to change anytime soon, either. And they usually have a way that you can also call from your computer to someone's house or cellphone. This usually entails buying minutes (think Calling Card or Prepaid phone like) from whichever program's provider you choose to use, assuming they offer that. In a couple of cases, you can even get a full fledged phone number that people can use to call on, with voicemail. The minutes are really cheap if you are calling inside the US and Canada. They do have rates for other countries that are fairly reasonable if comparing to the phone companies.

Anyway, you have no doubt seen the nice little "Call me" button, which I have to change, near the bottom left of the site. I've been toying with it off and on since it came out. And I would love to try the others, if there are any volunteers. Shoot me an email. I encourage you to try at least one of them and tell your friends. The sound quality (for skype anyway) is also pretty good. This will more than likely tie you to a computer unless you opt to buy some accessories like a VoIP enabled cordless phone. Be warned, just like with Vonage and the like, Broadband internet is prefered. Dial up will probably work, but not so well. You are pushing a lot of data through your connection. Also, no power, no worky. Unless you have Gen...HEY!!

Well, let me reign this in. The reason I was excited about the above post is because I use Skype sometimes when I call long distance. Which means I use what they call SkypeOut minutes for this. Now, with the above announcement, I don't have to use any of my minutes to call anyone in the US or Canada. And since I don't know anyone in Canada, I can pretty much relegate it to the US. This is SWEET! So if you get a call from some crazy looking number (because apparently Skype calls don't show up like regular numbers), and you aren't hiding from bill collectors...Don't act like i'm the ONLY one...it might be me.

Now would be a great time to try this stuff out. DO IT! DO IT! In case you want to try out a PC to PC VoIP solution and you haven't clicked the links above, you can go here:

Skype

Project Gizmo

Yahoo Messenger

Google Talk - If you already have a Gmail account, you already have it and it's quite possibly
already activated. Just check the bottom of your inbox page.

MSN Messenger

P.S. - Hey What you know? I guess I did do kind of a primer after all. Holla or Email me.

P.P.S. - Oh, and if you have webcam, you can use some of these for video chat. I love
technology.

     Song(s) of the Moment:
Gills and Tails - Amel Larrieux
Closer - Goapele
Better Days - Dianne Reeves*
(* You know, because of Mother's Day and all)

Earlier today (Monday), I decided to call my Internet Service Provider (ISP), Bellsouth, to ask a question or two about bumping up my DSL speed. Keep in mind, I did say question only. Also keep in mind that Bellsouth's website is not exactly forthcoming with a lot of pertinent info so don't think I didn't try it. That said, I've done about as much legwork as I felt that I could could have about this on occaision, so I just felt like calling to check a thing or two. Mainly whether or not I would have to get a new modem or schedule an appointment for them to come out. Actually, I wanted to know if Bellsouth had laid down some Fiber optic cable preparing to roll out really High speed DSL like some other company is sporadically doing. I know that they have been right off of my street digging and what not, but I didn't ask what was going on. If Fiber had been put down, and was available,  they would have to come out and install it. I wish I could do it, but that calls for some new equipment like a new box next to my power meter and possible drilling and whatnot.

Anyway, when I called I didn't think that I would have to deal with a situation like this or this. I just found one thing completely funny. You would think it would be the "young" lady with the heavy (eastern not Native American) Indian accent going by the name, Erica Gimble(SP). You might think it would be that said woman, upon hearing my telephone number wrong twice, jumps right to the nicely prepared script with her finger on the mute button (that she did use) after I told her that I just wanted to ask a couple of questions, not order anything. Or maybe it was that she stayed right on the script after not really-kinda-sorta answering one out my three questions.  Perhaps it was the background chatter that clearly didn't sound anywhere close to being near where I am locally.  Could have been the realization 0.5 seconds into the conversation that I should have hung up and tried another route (like pressing 2 to try to get someone from the service department before pressing 3 to change or inquire about my existing service).  Oh wait, it could have been the fact that after she kinda sort of did(n't) answer my questions, she broke into the script about changing my  (lack of) Long Distance service. Who knows...

Well, I am enjoying my new speed (yep, that was it), but it still doesn't seem fast enough. I'm a geek at heart, there may not be a such thing as "fast enough", but I think Fiber will be close if it ever rolls out here, assuming it hasn't. There's one more level up I didn't get. See, if she had been good, she probably would have gotten me to get it.
